Life is Short

“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered—
how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
at best, each of us is but a breath.”

—Psalm 39:4–5

Encouragement for Today

The psalmist asks God to remind him of life’s brevity. Why focus on this? Because we need to be reminded that we can’t accomplish everything we might want to. If we want to live a life of lasting significance, we must submit it to God and ask him what he wants us to do, what he wants to bless. Our own limitations and mortality drive us to God, which is where we need to be. While the world may urge us to focus on human potential, God asks us to focus on limitations—so that we depend on God, not ourselves.
